Mr Bean

Our challenge for the second series was to implement a new digital pipeline which would mean we could make the whole production under one roof in London and enable Rowan Atkinson to be positively involved with the process, at strategic points along the way.

Rowan has two degrees and a masters in engineering, he has a logical approach to comedy which was fascinating and I learnt a lot. Careful consideration of the timing, the beats and the framing. The voice records, (which, unusually we did to the storyboards), were great fun!

We had to ‘match’ the weighty, drawn animation from the previous hit series which was made several years previously. Our team pushed the digital 2D tools like never before, we had some real challenges, but everyone pulled for one another; producing funny, subtle, weighty character animation, it felt good to pull it off!

It was excellent working with Rowan, Tom Beattie and the crack team we assembled at Tiger, it was great to gently shake up the writing team, I particularly enjoyed getting Alex Collier involved. It was brilliant to be BAFTA nominated and it’s been great to see that they’ve made more series of Mr Bean using the same pipeline since I moved on.
